Description

Slow Cooker Indian Butter Chicken is creamy, rich, and full of warm spices a comforting restaurant style dish where tender chicken simmers in tomato sauce and is finished with skyr yogurt for a luxurious texture.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup plain skyr or Greek style yogurt
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Optional: fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place chicken in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  2. Add crushed tomatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, butter, garam masala, cumin, paprika, turmeric, chili powder, and salt.
  3. Stir gently to coat the chicken in the sauce.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours or high for 2–3 hours, until chicken is tender.
  5. Remove chicken and cut or shred into bite sized pieces, then return to the slow cooker.
  6. Stir in skyr yogurt and heavy cream until smooth and creamy.
  7. Cover and cook for an additional 15–20 minutes on low.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.

Notes

  • Use boneless skinless chicken thighs for juicier results, or breasts for a leaner option.
  • For a gluten free dish, ensure the crushed tomatoes are gluten free (most are).
  • Skyr yogurt gives a tangy, creamy texture; you can substitute with Greek yogurt or sour cream if needed.

  • Garnish with fresh cilantro for brightness.
