Ingredients
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon flavored extract (e.g., vanilla, peppermint, or banana)
Food coloring (optional)
Powdered sugar (for dusting and rolling)
Wax paper squares for wrapping
Instructions
-
Grease a large marble slab or baking sheet with butter, or line with a silicone mat.
-
In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar and cornstarch, then add corn syrup, water, salt, and butter.
-
Stir continuously over medium heat until the mixture boils. Attach a candy thermometer and cook until it reaches 250°F (hard-ball stage).
-
Remove from heat and stir in extract and food coloring.
-
Pour the mixture onto the prepared surface, let cool until safe to handle.
-
Butter your hands, then pull the taffy for 10–15 minutes until it becomes lighter in color.
-
Roll into ropes and cut into 1-inch pieces. Dust with powdered sugar and wrap in wax paper.
Notes
-
Ensure the candy thermometer reaches 250°F to get the perfect consistency for taffy.
-
Be careful when handling hot taffy—let it cool enough to avoid burns.
-
Use food coloring for a fun, colorful twist.
-
Store taffy in a cool, dry place to keep it from becoming too sticky.
